Bose condensation of cavity polaritons beyond the linear regime: The thermal equilibrium of a model microcavity

چکیده
We consider a generalization of the Dicke model. This model describes localized, physically separated, saturable excitations, such as excitons bound on impurities, coupled to a single long-lived mode of an optical cavity. We consider the thermal equilibrium of this model at a fixed total number of excitons and photons. We find a phase in which both the cavity field and the excitonic polarization are coherent. This phase corresponds to a Bose condensate of cavity polaritons, generalized to allow for the fermionic internal structure of the excitons. It is separated from the normal state by an unusual reentrant phase boundary. We calculate the excitation energies of the model, and hence the optical absorption spectra of the cavity. In the condensed phase the absorption spectrum is gapped. The presence of this gap distinguishes the polariton condensate from the normal state and from a conventional laser, even when the inhomogeneous linewidth of the excitons is so large that there is no observable polariton splitting in the normal state.

Bose-Einstein Condensation of Long-Lifetime Polaritons in Thermal Equilibrium.
The experimental realization of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) with atoms and quasiparticles has triggered wide exploration of macroscopic quantum effects. Microcavity polaritons are of particular interest because quantum phenomena such as BEC and superfluidity can be observed at elevated temperatures. However, polariton lifetimes are typically too short to permit thermal equilibration. This ...

The Hartree-Fock-Popov theory of interacting Bose particles is developed, for modeling exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities undergoing Bose-Einstein condensation. A self-consistent treatment of the linear exciton-photon coupling and of the exciton nonlinearity provides a thermal equilibrium description of the collective excitation spectrum, of the polariton energy shifts and of the...
متن کاملBose-Einstein condensation of microcavity polaritons in a trap.
We have created polaritons in a harmonic potential trap analogous to atoms in optical traps. The trap can be loaded by creating polaritons 50 micrometers from its center that are allowed to drift into the trap. When the density of polaritons exceeds a critical threshold, we observe a number of signatures of Bose-Einstein condensation: spectral and spatial narrowing, a peak at zero momentum in t...

We describe photonic crystal microcavities with very strong light-matter interaction to realize roomtemperature, equilibrium, exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). This goal is achieved through a careful balance between strong light trapping in a photonic band gap (PBG) and large exciton density enabled by a multiple quantum-well (QW) structure with a moderate dielectric constant....
متن کاملPolariton lasing vs. photon lasing in a semiconductor microcavity.
Nearly one decade after the first observation of Bose-Einstein condensation in atom vapors and realization of matter-wave (atom) lasers, similar concepts have been demonstrated recently for polaritons: half-matter, half-light quasiparticles in semiconductor microcavities. The half-light nature of polaritons makes polariton lasers promising as a new source of coherent and nonclassical light with...
